Nowadays, skincare products are flying off the shelves, all thanks to the awareness of maintaining your skin and trying to get a natural look rather than an artificial one. However, with most of these products, several chemicals, and other ingredients make them unhealthy for human consumption over a longer period. So instead, one can refer to natural products produced at a mass scale that have immersive effects and bring a lot of positive change to the human body. One such company that is specializing in natural skincare products is Bhu botanicals.
Bhu botanicals is a skincare company that tends to specialize extensively in the skincare side of things. The company produces skin care products ranging for different purposes and intents. Although the company might be as organic as possible, they use 95% organic and natural materials. In comparison, 5% is other ingredients to improve the shelf life and longevity of the product. Furthermore, they offer a wide range of products such as lip balms, serum oils for skin, under eye-rollers, scrubs, lotions, travel kits, and so on. Bangalore Insider learned a lot from a short conversation with Mahima Gupta, the founder of Bhu botanicals, and the conversation has been shared below.
Give a brief info about your startup?
Bhu botanicals is a brand that presents natural skincare products including products for the face, body, lips. The brand goes by the tagline ’From the house of mother earth’ which determines the need and benefits of natural ingredients. The brand presents a variety of ranges such as Skin Brightening Range and Classic Combos.
What made you start your startup and what problem does it solve?
I was always a middle-class girl. I was studious but when I grew up as a teenager, I was fascinated by the beauty products around me but found out that there were not many genuine natural products in an affordable range. The high class can always get expensive products but it is not that easy for the middle-class. Therefore, to provide natural skincare in an affordable range, we came up with bhu botanicals. We have also made sure that no animal testing is done while creating and production of each product.
Tell us about yourself, your previous jobs/ventures? What were you doing before this startup?
Before taking up bhu I was working as a market researcher with a leading research organization, I was also enrolled in PhD and was taking up a lot of research work.
I also enjoyed a short teaching stint at a prestigious college.
And then, bhu happened!
I started reading ayurvedic texts and searching Ayurvedic plants and herbs that can help in improving the skin of people. We came up with bhu botanicals which are 95% natural and cater to all skin types.
Where is your startup based? Why do you think that is the best place for you?
We are based in Delhi. Delhi is my hometown and we have already set processes and channels here. We know the vendors and suppliers of this place and that gives us an edge to from Delhi.
As long as the manufacturing of our products happen in Delhi, it is the perfect place to operate from! We deliver our products all over India from here in Delhi. This place suits us as we can communicate with the entire country through couriers easily.
As a startup founder, what are you paranoid about? What keeps you awake at night?
A startup is always at a risk. There is a lot of hard work that goes daily behind the scenes to keep the brand working. Daily, we are required to take many tough decisions and there is always a risk of failure behind every decision. No, we are not afraid of failures as we believe every failed way leads to a successful path ahead. Our belief keeps us going.
Who are your competitors and how are you better than them?
Many natural skincare brands also claim to use natural products. We do not undermine any of them and at the same time, we know that if we keep improving on our products, we will be better today than what we were yesterday. For tomorrow, we want to be a lot better than what we are today.
How hard is it to have a work-life balance as a startup founder and how do you manage it?
It wasn’t easy when we initially began. Taking care of the home has never been off my priority list. The new addition of work-life to my priority list did require juggling up of timings. But now I have learned the trick to manage my time by writing down everything that needs to be done the next day. Luckily, the family and the team have also been very supportive.

We have invested our savings in the brand. At times, we do juggle to manage the funds. Any funding is most welcome as the money would be used to grow the company
What’s the biggest misconception people have about you? Why do they have that? What’s the reality?
The commonest misconception not only for me but for women, in general, is that we cannot handle business. I am not aware of the reason but I feel, as a woman, we devote ourselves completely to our families and do not focus on our professional growth. However, the reality is once a woman decides to take on a task, no one can beat her.
What gets you excited about this company?
The aspect that we can deliver genuine and natural skincare products to one and all keeps me excited all the time. The fact that we are not cheating the customers with false information is something I, as a founder, am proud of.
Another thing that makes me feel good is that our Skin Brightening Range is here to curb the obsession towards fairness and develop the habit and happiness to glow with the natural skin tone.
Tell us how a day in your life looks like? Your schedule for a day right from the time you get up till you hit the bed at night.
The day is a busy one. The kind of life I have always desired is what I am currently living. I get up and finish my morning routine and family care to see a lot of emails and calls for orders, queries, genuine reviews that boost me to keep working. I take time out to read new texts for herbs so that new launches can be made based on authentic research. During the day, I make sure to personally communicate with each member of the team so that I can know the problems customers and team members are facing and offer solutions that work. After dinner, my hard work makes it easier for me to go to bed. Before, that I do jot down the tasks for the next day.
Tell us about your team and how did you meet each other?
We are a small team-cum-family who met through links. We communicate with each other on WhatsApp, email calls to share our queries, problems, laughs. We haven’t ever needed to initiate a formal conversation with each other as we can personally feel each other’s conversations.
