Edupin Technologies is a Mumbai based startup, they work for educational institutions to provide a customised solution to manage their resources, students, staff and faculties.
We got an opportunity to talk with Gobind, the co-founders of the Edupin Technologies. And I am sure; his startup story will inspire you. Look at the journey of Gobind and Soham. How they work together to accomplish their passion despite that they are in different cities.
Give a brief info about your startup?
We work in favour of educational institutes, providing them with an all-around solution to manage their resources, students, staff and faculties. We provide added functionalities of Communications via SMS, eMail, Cloud File Share, Attendance, Finance, Online Payment Gateway, P2P GPS Trackers, GPS for buses and even health trackers for students and much more! Do you own a school, college, coaching institute? No problem, we can help you consolidate your operations on single Cloud-Based Platform.
What made you start your startup and what problem does it solve?
Being blessed with a sister who is 7 years old, I was always concerned of her well being. Also, given the recent surfacing of loopholes in security and management of our educational institutions, me and my partner, we both felt that we need a platform, which is not only an “ERP”, but is also an all-round solution to school’s major technological requirements. Hence, we started vetting the current players and came out with the areas that needed attention, hence focusing on not just re-inventing the wheel, but to actually take current standards as our foundation and build something unique on it.
Tell us about yourself, your previous jobs/ventures? What were you doing before this startup?
Well, Soham, entrepreneur by choice, runs his own business in IT industry, Mintage Fin & Tech, hence bringing in his wisdom in management, marketing and finances to this startup. Me on the other hand, am a pure geek. I am fresh-outa-college (Not really though, I am still in my final year, waiting for my results). My life revolves around my sister, laptop and of-course Netflix. I am a self learner, my experience coming from 4 years of freelancing out of which 2 were for Govt. of India on their Digital India Projects. My passion for S/W development brings the technical knowledge required for the essentials.
Where is your startup based out of? Why do you think that is the best place for you?
Due to my ongoing college education, Soham and I work in separate cities. He in Mumbai and I in Dehradun. So all the technical updates, decisions and progress comes from my hostel room in Dehradun, whereas everything else comes from Soham’s office in Mumbai. Regarding why this is the best place: I have spent the last 4 years in this room, with a thousand memories confined in these walls. My roommates make this place as lively as possible, not to mention the energy that, comes from the nostalgia of my ‘Study table’.
As a startup founder, what are you paranoid about? What keeps you awake at night?
It’ll be a big lie I say: “Naah! Whats to be paranoid about? It’ll work out for good in the end.”. Of course stay paranoid about a thousand things: un-detected bugs, response to the new upgrades and features, ensuring uptime with continuously going development, planning new features, enhancing old ones, keeping the UX as intuitive as possible is a constant challenge and much more. Soham, balances this paranoia out by his steady persona. It’s kind of a ying-yang at play here, if you think about it.
Who are your competitions and how are you better than them?
What we offer is pretty unique: Yes a part of us would fall in the conventional School/College ERP solution but that doesn’t paint the whole picture. We have our USPs. We not only place School’s ease to manage operations but also place the parent’s urge to ensure proper communication, monitoring and security of their ward at our highest priorities. This brings us to building on features like Person to GPS Bus Tracking, Personal Tracking, Health Monitoring, Real-Time Communications, Maintaining proper documentation and much more. Apart from this, we try to finish the institute’s compulsion of buying different platforms for different purposes by adding online assignment and quiz evaluation systems and functionalities like eDiary and Online Payment Gateway.
How hard is it to have a work-life balance as a startup founder and how do you manage it?
As a developer, It keeps me occupied almost all the time: planning, designing and developing features. It is almost nothing compared to the travelling, planning and operations that Soham has to go through. Yes, it tends to take a big chunk out of our lives but I think It’s a Big Thanks to our families who understand this and let us pursue our passion for this to the fullest.
Have you raised funding? If yes, then we would like to know the details. If no then please tell us if you are looking to raise.
Um, we did plan to go with the conventional way of getting funded by an investor, but then upon some serious thoughts, we decided to put it on hold and work harder to get into profits without getting funds. So we started with absolutely nothing. No savings with us, and no help from any investor, but fortunately the hard work paid off and we started getting a great response: making us cash positive. But yes, since our goal is not achieved, now we are planning to expand many folds and for that, we are now looking for channel partners, who will be happy to work by our side. We are not looking for funding now.
What’s the biggest misconception people have about you? Why do they have that? What’s the reality?
As I mentioned earlier: biggest misconception people carry about is: We are “just another ERP with better UI”. Well, thats not true! Yes, we use ERP as our main hinge and offer a bucket of features as a part of our solution but the story doesn’t end their. We have a bucket load of features and products that can make your institute a safer, efficient and preferable environment. Somehow we sometimes find ourselves in a position, where we are being vetted only by a small section of a huge canvas.
What gets you excited about this company?
It’s a bit cliche I know, but: THE PASSION! The passion both Soham and I carry for this. We lose the track of time almost every other day, just working on this. We developed this, and are now cash positive. That is a clear impression of our Passion and attachment to this line of work. When we see clients appreciating the efforts and actually getting fruitful results, its such a boost! It’s a high that we both thrive on. That’s what keeps us going and will keep us going.
Tell us about your team and how did you meet each other?
About us meeting: It is pretty interesting, I was working with Soham’s Firm. I was hired for some other ongoing project. A few months later, midst a random conversation I pitched him this Idea and after a couple of long discussions, and a few days later we were all set to get this rolling! I remember working till 4 in the morning, finalising our preliminary feature list, our roadmaps, branding and what not! It indeed was a series of small things that started way before us even talking about it that lead us in taking all the decisions that finally lead us to the point where we are.
